This lovely J.R.R. Tolkien-inspired map of Mount Evelyn was drawn by Adam Mattinson, who grew up here. It is a fantasy, showing a mix of older and modern features, and poetic licence taken with the names.
Adam includes some unfamiliar names – Valinda and Swift’s Sawmill – and some we know a little about, like Billygoat Hill and McKillop. There are other old names associated with Mount Evelyn, like Bullock Hill, the Zig Zag, and Mistletoe Bend, with tantalisingly brief histories.
There are many things we still don’t know. Who created the garden on the property the Hardys bought in Hereford Road? Do we know the full history of Grantully? Why was the Billygoat Hill area so named? And the Underlying Mystery of the First People in Mount Evelyn.
What are the Hidden Histories of Mount Evelyn? We’d like to hear from you. We plan to add chapters to the book.
